First day as intern
You are wearing the white coat with the stethoscope around your neck, a pen in your pocket. You enter the hospital- no longer as a medical student but as a doctor. A bit anxious, but excited to start your internship journey- ready to do what it takes ( even though you don’t know what it is)
The internship year - You get to do/ have to do anything & everything literally- from filling lab forms, writing prescriptions, going for doctors’ ward rounds, writing discharges, counselling patients & answering endless questions patiently, assisting other doctors/residents in OPD / OT for a different department every month.
At times you get exhausted, stressed out, even wishing that the internship should end quickly. But whenever an intern is called for some work, you are the first to respond- there is something new to learn every day.
Last day as an intern
The day is finally here- feels like the whole year flew past. You have become wiser- no longer the naive doctor entering the hospital a year back.
You have seen & experienced it - the joys & sorrows of others, of being there whenever you feel someone needs you. The hospital has taught you many things-that has changed a lot in you as a person- you have become more resilient, responsible, caring, humble, empathetic, selfless. The first real step outside the hospital is the beginning of a great future as a doctor.
What was one thing in internship that changed your perspective about life?
