Internship is one of the most important phase in the life of every Medical student. It is the time when book knowledge meets real practical experience. Working as a BAMS intern in a civil hospital is not always easy, but it teaches many life lessons. Every day brings new patients, new cases, and new responsibilities. It helps interns to improve their confidence and clinical skills.
There are mainly 3 shifts , morning, evening and night and all the interns are segregated into different departments. Major departments like Surgery, Ortho, Opthalmology, Pediatrics, and casualty have night shifts. All other departments have morning and evening shifts. After attendance at 9 Am, the day starts with ward rounds along with senior doctors. During rounds, interns cross check patient files, note down vitals, and understand treatment plans. It is a good learning experience as every patient teaches different things.
The interns who are posted in OPD’s help senior doctor in taking history and vitals of the patient. Simultaneously , senior doctors help the interns by explaining intresting cases . Not every doctor explains everything which is a right perspective because , spoon feeding never works for anyone.
Interns who are posted in casualty and experience totally ice breaking activities. In casualty department, they may help in dressing wounds, giving first aid, or assisting doctors or performing the activities like stomach wash, suturing etc. Though the work can be tiring, it gives practical exposure.Along with hospital duties, interns also have to complete case papers and maintain records. Our shift ends with discussing each other’s experiences at tea stall where everyone seems happy even after the whole tiring tasks.
Life of a BAMS intern in civil hospital is busy, challenging, and full of learning. It is not only about treating patients but also about developing discipline, patience, and responsibility.
