Innovations powered by Young Minds in Biotech

In today’s times biotech is not only defined by research but also the immense industrial relevance it has commonly crafted by students. Increasingly, students are going beyond classrooms to build innovations with real world impacts. These discoveries are shaped into startups and various platforms are being organized to connect them to investors.

Platforms like NitiQuest, India’s national student startup challenge held annually. T brought over 1400 startup applications with 12 finalists pitching their ideas to investors, mentors and ecosystem leaders this year. Some of the student-led biotech startups which stood out in this challenge included:

SynapseAudit (JIS College of Engineering, West Bengal): It is a self-learning AI security ecosystem and learns from feedback and applied fixes. In the biotech sector, SynapseAudit is useful in securing codebases of the platforms where regulated research data are stored.

AgriBotics (Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering Lavale Pune): It involves integration of IoT sensor data and AI-driven insights for real time data analytics for monitoring of conditions affecting agriculture thus leading to smarter and sustainable agriculture.

Ember Pvt Ltd. (BITS Pilani): A health and wellness-based startup which transforms traditional remedies into scientifically validated products aiming to bring the regional herbal remedies to mainstream market with high efficacy and affordability. Its flagship product Burnicol a proprietary, scientifically validated herbal formulation for fast and effective burn healing.

Various other innovative startups are being built by students and such platforms like NitiQuest provide a chance to present it. Therefore, more and more platforms should be made available specifically for students so that their efforts are recognized and appropriate funding is given for their startups. This will spark a curiosity in students to think beyond the syllabus and actually apply their knowledge into building something fruitful.

What other initiatives do you think, need to be taken to promote building of biotech startups by student s?

I think entrepreneurship and product building should be giving as elective courses in all kinds of medical courses, because we as medical people understand the biology of human , but we lag on the commercial aspect of it.

Thanks @Anushree_Poojari2025 for sharing this. I had no idea about NitiQuest.

I feel lack of funding and specialized lab space could be a primary hurdle for students. Properly formulated government or public sector initiatives could provide the necessary support to encourage students to build biotech startups.

Yes, definitely other initiatives should be taken for such start ups. But How far these kind of start ups go?

promoting startups by doing global collaboration by helping them to access global market and expertise.

Very true. The availability of more platforms and funding for student startups will help them to create new, innovative things in the field of biotech.

Give students mentorship, small funding, and labs to test ideas. Also connect Ayurveda with modern biotech so traditional knowledge can become real products. This will help more student startups grow.
