How to improve memory ??

We are future docs we are supposed to have a sharp memory. It seems like whatever I read I am not able to retain it, this is the main reason why I am not able to score in my exams🤷🏻‍♀️. Having goldfish memory is PRETTY BAD DUDE.

If you want to improve memory, a few things really help.

  1. First, don’t just read—try to quiz yourself. Flashcards are the best source for this
Testing your brain helps you remember better. Also, don’t cram. Study a bit every day and keep coming back to the topic (this is called spaced repetition).

  2. Sleep is super important—your brain fixes memories while you sleep, so try to get at least 7 hours. Regular exercise also boosts brain power by increasing blood flow.

  3. Eat healthy—foods like fish, nuts, berries, and green veggies are good for the brain.
Black coffee over here helps a lot.

  4. For me the best technique is, to try teaching someone else what I’ve learned—it makes me remember better. And finally, avoid multitasking.

I can totally relate having goldfish memory myself :smiling_face_with_tear::smiling_face_with_tear:

Sometimes nothing works but I try to make key points and recite them again and again … It might help at times… :raising_hands:

Never heard of this term “Goldfish memory”. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Key to memorizing is repetition. And in that sense , brain of med students is no different than those of other sapiens.:relieved_face:

@Hbdoctor Goldfish memory actually refers to having short attention span and forgetful behaviours. It is used as a metaphor to represent such forgetful habits.

Even my memory is not that great.
But when it comes to important stuff, I try these strategies:

Practice repetition and rehearsal to reinforce new information.

Organize information into chunks or associations to enhance retention.

Engage in mentally stimulating activities, such as puzzles or learning a new skill, to challenge and strengthen your brain.

Additionally, maintain a healthy lifestyle by getting regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and a balanced diet rich in nutrients that support brain health.

The only thing that has helped me retain things was the pressure of passing the exam one night prior to it😂

To improve memory the main thing is Revise, Revise, Revise.
Study through pneumonic.
Stick short notes, flowcharts, diagrams in the wall or mirror, so will be visible as we are walking before it and will just look.
Each look register each word, thus making it whole.
But, main thing is revise throughout and make into practice.

Hmm, this is what I go through too. What I do is,
Use Flashcards.
Early morning reading.
Not reading or highlighting for more than 30 mins.
Taking proper intervals between study sessions.
Memory Maps (Life saviour in exams)
One page notes.
Revision atleast skim overview of what you’ve read.

Honestly, memory in med school is a battlefield—it’s not about being naturally gifted, it’s about having the right strategy

Well revision after revision after revision and voila you have it

  1. Get enough sleep: Sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation.
  2. Exercise regularly: Exercise improves blood flow to the brain, boosting memory and cognitive function.
  3. Reduce stress: High stress levels can negatively impact memory; try relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing.
  4. Stay mentally active: Engage in mentally stimulating activities, such as reading, puzzles, or learning a new skill.
