Clinical electives are hands on training rotations in specific speciality like cardiology, paediatrics, neurology, child- family health and so on. These training rotations are short term provided by medical boards, institutions abroad.

Why one should apply for clinical electives?

1. These electives helps a medical graduate to explore a specific specialty way before they choose it for their post graduate degree.
2. Hands on experience , active patient care in the specific clinical elective chosen.
3. Learning and understanding healthcare systems of different countries like US, UK, Singapore, Germany, etc.

What does the institutes chosen for clinical electives provide to the student in return?

1. Strengthens residence application to that specific institute or countries medical board.
2. Networking with professors and doctors of that specific speciality.
3. Strong “letters of recommendation” (LORs).

Important things to note:

1. According to NMC electives abroad does not typically count towards credit transfer for ones home degree.
2. Have to apply prior to completing UG medical degree because post completion it’s considered as “observer-ship”rather than as a clinical elective.
3. Must apply 6-9 months prior or even earlier to completing UG medical degree.

Requirements for applying:

1. Certification in language proficiency like TOEFL/ IELETS for English, B2 level certification for Germany.
2. Proof of immunisation.
3. Medical transcripts or official academic records.
4. Letter from dean for recommendation , good standing certificate.
5. Valid passport.
6. Personal CV.

1. any where internationally- International federation of medical students Association (IFMSA) will help land a clinical elective.
2. Child Family Health International ( CFHI)

Singapore: Singapore general health education (SGH).

Germany: should apply to individual college portal , no unified single portal available.

Eg. LMU Munic Facility of medicine

UK: no unified portal but NHS Trust website will provide links to each specific hospital. Private health insurance for the student is required since is not covered under NHS.

USA: it’s requires completion of USMLE step 1 , portals to apply- AAMC USLO, NIH clinical electives program.

students preferring knowledge of foreign health care system along with experience of culture from other countries should go for clinical electives abroad, but must keep in mind the expense of fee, travel, documentation procedure and living of a foreign country.
