This goes out to all doctors…Have you ever had to lie for the greater good?
Not blatant lies but half truths maybe?
Perhaps to ease the pain of grief?
Perhaps to convince someone of the right course of action?
Have you ever felt compelled to help in this way? Or do you remove yourself from the situation to avoid trouble?
How do you tackle frustrating situations, where you know a little white lie could untangle the mess?
Yes, we dentists always say, ‘It will be done soon’ or “Its almost done, just 2 mins” and continuing the procedure for another hour because some cases need more time than we expected!
It will depend upon the situation. I will not define them as “lies”, rather I will refer them as “words of empathy”. To communicate the signficant information in the right way is a very essential skill. Sometimes, words are therapeutic and they can stimulate auto-healing in someone, as everyone’s body is capable of self-healing. So, sometimes conveying the truth in a subtle way or conveying few words of encouragement that can allow the person to take steps towards taking care of their well-being, goes beyond treatment after the medical process is over. Being a doctor is not just a job, it is about saving or uplifting someone’s life, as people trust doctors for their well-being. So, keeping that humanitarian attribute intact and spreading them in between the regular work is a helpful step towards the wellness of any person.
Sometimes , the truth can hurt more than lie ever could . I believe it’s not always about what is wrong or right - it’s about what a person needs in that moment . if a lie can keep someone hope , protect their heart… is it really wrong ?
I heard people says ''Be honest no matter what ‘’ but life is not black and white . there are moments when a half truth becomes an act of love , and lie become a shelter .
