What is the scope of forensic dentistry in India? Are there any advanced courses on it in India? What is the scope abroad?
There are few opportunities in the public sector.
Forensic medicine and forensic dentistry as a whole are well developed in the West as criminal justice system is far better developed and they have the allocations of budget towards investigations of crimes.
Since majority of the people in the US for example have primary dentists (through health insurance), thus forensic dentistry is also put to the best use.
In coming times, in India too, forensic sciences and dentistry would grow, but at this time scope is limited as there are not many job vacancies.
Forensic dentistry is still a niche field in India with limited public sector roles, mostly in academics or medico-legal cases. While opportunities are slowly growing, the scope is much better abroad where it’s more established and used in real investigations. India does offer a few short-term courses, but advanced options are more common overseas.
Here in India, forensic odontology has long been overlooked by the forensic department. The lack of dental record keeping and the underutilization of its potential are major challenges. Moreover, legal system is unaware of the role of forensic odontologist in crime investigation. These hurdles, combine with limited job opportunities that continue to hinder the progress of this field
I’ve noticed that forensic odontology in India is still mostly limited to academic circles. There’s definitely potential, but unless it’s more closely tied in with law enforcement or medico-legal systems, it doesn’t really get used in a practical sense. That said, I’ve seen a few private dental colleges starting to introduce workshops or electives on it—which is at least a move in the right direction.
I think there are courses on forensic dentistry, but most colleges which provide this course are private.

Forensic dentistry in India is a growing sector, primarily focused on identifying criminals and disaster victims through dental records. Opportunities in the Indian public sector remain limited due to a lack of awareness and limited training options. Abroad, however, the field offers broader prospects with established roles in forensic labs, law enforcement, and disaster response teams, making it a promising path for those eyeing international careers.
My views in this discussion are similar to most of those replied. Forensic dentistry is growing in India. It is yet to be established properly, but can provide a lot of insight in crime scenes. Besides, there aren’t a lot of universities offering it in India.

Forensic dentistry, a field that is gradually expanding in India, plays a vital role in filling the gap between dentistry and criminal justice. While opportunities from forensic science laboratories to government and private sectors exist, lack of awareness of such fields among students and parents is considered a major barrier.
