Food Safety Alert: Nitrofuran Antibiotics in Eggs

Nitrofuran antibiotics, once used in poultry farming, are banned in food-producing animals due to their carcinogenic and genotoxic potential. Yet, residues and their long-lasting metabolites are still occasionally detected in eggs, indicating illegal use or poor regulatory enforcement.

What makes this concerning is that these compounds don’t always cause immediate illness—they accumulate silently, increasing long-term health risks such as cancer and antimicrobial resistance, especially with regular consumption.

Nitrofuran metabolites can remain bound to animal tissues even after the drug itself is no longer detectable.

Are current food safety checks enough to protect consumers—or do we need stricter surveillance from farm to plate?

we definitely need very strict
reinforcement of laws for this
