In USA, we are called IMGs (International Medical Graduates Vs AMGs (American Medical Graduates).IMGs are also referred to as FMGs (Foreign Medical Graduates).
However, in India, I came across the term FMGs - those who come back to India after attaining MBBS /MD from abroad.
I noticed that FMGs in India are put to some hardship or bumps (notwithstanding the fact that like other countries, India too has shortage of doctors). Is it true and if yes, why?
What are the pros and cons of doing MBBS abroad? Would like to understand.
Thanks in advance!
Honestly, doing MBBS abroad has its fair share of ups and downs. On the plus side, it’s often way more affordable than private colleges in India, and you don’t need a super high NEET score to get in. I’ve loved the exposure to different cultures, healthcare systems, and meeting people from all over the world. Some universities have great infrastructure and facilities too.
But it’s not all smooth—one big challenge is clearing the FMGE or NExT to practice in India. Also, adjusting to a new country, language, and lifestyle can be tough in the beginning. And not every foreign medical college is up to the mark, so it’s really important to choose wisely.
At the end of the day, if you’re focused and choose the right path, studying abroad can be a great experience. But it definitely comes with responsibilities and the need for good planning.
