First Experience shadowing an operation as a medical student

Many few get a chance to get into an OT at an age of 20 years. The night before is filled with excitement with a little bit of fear, what if i do something which is in the “DO NOT” section of the OT. Then in the morning we rush to reach before time, get into scrubs with all the gear and enter the OT. The patient was already in when I entered and then saw the machines the tools in green sheet, had so many questions but just observing, the time goes so fast and the patient is shifted after the procedure. Mine was a good experience thank god but would love to know how it went for others.

How was your first experience shadowing in the OT ? What are some of the basic things you learnt there as a student ?

It was an eye-opening experience being able to firsthand see the anesthetic and antiseptic protocol. The efforts taken to ensure the safety of the patient while under GA are immeasurable. Immediate decisions are taken in the OT which require skills and experience. I’ve dreamed of holding a scalpel one day too.
