Electronic devices and Mindless eating : Is there a connection?

Have you ever finished a packet of snacks while watching videos on your phone and realized you barely noticed what you are eating?

This phenomenon is known as mindless eating- eating without paying attention to hunger, fullness, or the amount of food consumed.

Mindless eating can lead to increased calorie intake, frequent intake of high calorie foods may lead to obesity, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia .

In today’s digital world, electronic devices have become an integral part of children’s daily lives. Whether it’s watching videos, playing games, or scrolling through social media, screen exposure has increased significantly over the years.

Recent research suggests a potential connection between increased electronic device use and unhealthy eating patterns. Children and adults with high screen exposure were found to be more likely to :

  • Consume calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods.
  • Eat in response to external food cues rather than actual hunger.
  • Engage in emotional eating when stressed, bored, or upset.
  • Pay less attention to feelings of fullness while eating.

One possible explanation is that screens distract individuals from the act of eating. When attention is focused on a mobile phone, television, or tablet, people may become less aware of how much they are consuming, leading to what is often called “mindless eating”.

Additionally, prolonged screen use is often associated with reduced physical activity, creating a combination of behaviors that may negatively affect long-term health.

Do you think increased use of electronic devices is also contributing to the rise of lifestyle-related health conditions?
