Doctor vs Pharmacist Who Owns Prescribing Rights?

Prescribing is one of the most debated areas in healthcare. In many countries, pharmacists have limited or no rights to prescribe, while in others (like the UK, Canada, and parts of the US) pharmacists are given prescribing authority in certain conditions.

The argument for pharmacists:

  • They are the experts in medicines, drug interactions, and dosing.

  • Can reduce burden on doctors and improve access to care.

  • Especially useful in chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.

The argument against:

  • Prescribing involves diagnosis traditionally a doctor’s role.

  • Concerns about fragmented care if multiple professionals prescribe independently.

  • Risk of overstepping professional boundaries.

What do you think?

Should pharmacists be given independent prescribing rights, or should it remain a doctor-only domain?

I wish in India pharmacist gets right to prescribe medication as we see in other countries so every pharmacist will know about medication and its dispensing in depth

Pharmacist should be considered whole prescribing , opinion has to be asked.
