Do you know about hypersomnia?

Hypersomnia is a condition where a person feels excessively sleepy during the day or has trouble staying awake, even after getting enough sleep at night. It can affect daily life, work, and safety, and may be caused by sleep disorders, medications, or underlying health issues. Proper diagnosis and treatment are important to manage it effectively.

That’s truly enlightening, until now, I hadn’t heard about hypersomnia as more than just ā€œsleeping too much.ā€ It’s eye-opening to learn that even after 10–12 hours of sleep, someone can still feel drained, mentally foggy, and emotionally off. This isn’t laziness it’s a real issue that needs understanding.

Several factors can contribute sleep apnea, thyroid issues, depression, medications, or even irregular sleep patterns. A proper medical evaluation is key to identifying what’s really going on.

From a pharmacy perspective, I’d add that we can help by guiding patients on improving sleep hygiene like sticking to a sleep schedule, getting morning daylight, cutting caffeine while supporting them toward medical consultation when needed. The more we talk about it, the less people will feel judged and the more they’ll seek help instead.
