Digital Distraction – Is Social Media Stealing Our Focus?.....One ‘quick scroll’ and suddenly… we’re three episodes deep.

We open our notes to study… and suddenly find ourselves scrolling Instagram reels or watching “just one” YouTube video that turns into an hour. :mobile_phone:

Whether it’s constant notifications, fear of missing out (FOMO), or endless entertainment, digital distraction has become a real challenge in student life.

:speech_balloon: How do you deal with it?

Do you set screen time limits?

Use study apps like Forest or Pomodoro timers?

Or just embrace it as a “break” between studies?

  1. 5-minute limit on all social media apps – Since I need social media for news and articles, I can’t avoid it completely. A timer helps me ensure I don’t get stuck scrolling endlessly.
  2. Pomodoro timers – My personal favorite for staying focused and productive.
  3. Weekend breaks

To reduce screen time I set a time limit on social media apps. And instead of using social media I play with my dog for enjoyment and fun.

Yes, the 5-minute scroll easily turns into hours.

This is so true. I never come to senses that how my 5-10 minute decision of scrolling turns into 2-3 hours of lazy slouching with the phone in my hand leaving every other important work at a side.

I generally have set an app limit on all social media apps and once the limit is achieved, the apps automatically shut down and I can’t access any further for the day. And also once in a while deactivating social media platforms also helps me to see that there’s so much more to life and there’s so much to learn than just scrolling the time away!

Social media can really hijack our attention, right? You log on to check one thing, and suddenly you’re three episodes deep into a random video loop. It’s amazing how fast time flies once you start scrolling.

I’ve found setting simple limits like phone-free study hours or logging out after one use help reclaim focus. Has anyone else tried something that worked for them?
