Difficult cases or difficult patients! What will you choose?

In healthcare , a difficult patient with a simple case can feel more exhausting than a complex case with a cooperative patient.

Here’s the difference:

DIFFICULT PATIENT =

•	Questions every step because of doubt

•	Won't follow instructions but expect results

•	Drains your mental energy for hours

•	Even perfect treatment won't satisfy them

DIFFICULT CASE

•	Complex diagnosis

•	Technically challenging but patient is cooperative

•	You're in the zone of problem solving

•	Great outcome

•	Satisfaction at the end

So here’s MY question for you all:

  1. Option A: Easy patients + Complex cases
  2. Option B: Simple cases + Difficult patients

Which would you choose?

Because I think the real burnout in healthcare isn’t the clinical work. It’s also the people management.

I would choose difficult case over a difficult patient because difficult case helps you in learning, improves your skills and make you more professional and your patient is cooperative with you so you can not mentally exhauste.

I think both of the option are necessary for a good clinical practice indeed difficult patients are tough to handle but sometimes they become so due to lack of correct treatment

in my opinion you don’t get to choose one, you have to face however challenging the case or the patient may be.

Well I would like to put this in this way that sometimes even the simplest case may become a difficult one and the case which is appearing difficult might be simply managed. In clinical practice, the real challenge is not always the disease itself it is the unpredictability that comes with every patient. No two patients will be the same. Their behavior, response to treatment , outlook towards the Doctor… each and everything will be different. So my answer would be: neither option is truly straightforward, because our profession constantly reminds us to expect the unexpected.

Absolutely agree with you. Patient management is sometimes so challenging; it makes me want to question why we didn’t have a separate subject on this during our BDS days. We find different people with a variety of psychologies in clinical practice. But I would choose a mix of everything : difficult cases, easy patients; easy cases, difficult patients; difficult cases, difficult patients; easy cases, easy patients. That is something I keep in mind before each case: be prepared for the worst scenario.

Would prefer difficult case over difficult patient.
Yes it’s true the real burnout is managing a patient in healthcare.
The patient which doubt you at every steps will keep an eye on every change which a body will give during the treatment without thinking that it is in a positive way or the negative, and sometimes can panic over the changes which can hinder the treatment process.
While difficult case with calm patients can be more easy as what ever you perform, you perform in relaxed state with relax mind and patient with positive attitude gives more positive results whether it is a difficult or normal case. Soo, yes difficult cases are far better than difficult patients
