People often compare jobs based on salary, difficulty, or status. But I think every field has its own kind of physical and mental exhaustion that nobody fully understands unless they experience it.
In many corporate jobs, people spend hours sitting in front of screens every single day, barely moving, staring at laptops, dealing with deadlines, meetings, eye strain, back pain, mental fatigue, and a routine that can quietly become draining over time.
Meanwhile, in many medical and healthcare-related fields, people spend long hours standing, walking constantly, handling pressure, interacting with patients, managing emergencies, and physically exhausting themselves while still being expected to stay calm and focused.
Different environments. Different struggles.
One drains the body through stillness.
The other drains it through nonstop movement and pressure.
I think people underestimate how much work environments slowly affect both physical health and mental wellbeing over time.
Which type of work environment do you think is more exhausting in the long run, sitting all day or standing all day?
Very true. But for me mental exhaustion is the most worst kind. While working we can or we are forced upon by some incidents to change our lifestyle and be more physically active. But the mental stress at work is very difficult to manage. Hence i would go for mental exhaustion.
I too would go for mental exhaustion. Because physical exhaution be it by prolonged sitting or standing , gets relieved soon enough or immediately after a days rest, but the most trouble some one is the mental exhaution, which can take its own sweet time and can also act like a burnout, which might be concerning.
Yes, you struck an aching chord. However, it is difficult to directly compare these work environments because they are fundamentally different, each bringing its own unique set of pros and cons. I have met people who sit all day for work and have witnessed a fair share of their pain, whether mental or physical. Moreover, people who experience prolonged standing while working have their own story of equally challenging mental and physical exhaustion. I wouldn’t choose one over the other, as I believe both sides suffer in the long run; applied ergonomics is ultimately the answer to these problems.
I feel every work environment has its own pros and cons. Standing all day long or even sitting in front of our desktops, both sound equally strenuous, to be honest. I don’t know which is better. But I definitely feel normalizing taking breaks in between tasks is mandatory to relieve both mental and physical fatigue. At the end of the day, we are earning to have a good, comfortable, happy, and healthy life. If the end goal isn’t being met, what’s the purpose of having a job?
Any kind of exhaustion is detrimental to health.Mental exhaustion is the worst and the most difficult to deal with.We can atleast take some steps to minimise physical exhaustion but mental exhaustion is like a load on mind and slow poison in my opinion.
Good one! In the end all the hardwork and exhaustion is to live a healthy life! Cannot risk that for any kind of pain. Self care and taking breaks is very important like you said!
I would say both type of jobs can be exhausting as any type of job not done under good work environment and culture will lead to exhaustion both physically and mentally .
