Did Siddha View Mental Well-being Beyond the Individual?

When we talk about mental health today, we often focus on the individual.

Stress.
Anxiety.
Depression.
Burnout.

But while reading classical Siddha literature, I found myself asking a different question.
What if mental well-being was never meant to be understood in isolation?

One of the most beautiful thoughts comes from Thiruvalluvar, who reminds us:

“Mananalam mannuyirkku aakkam.”
A healthy mind is the foundation of a flourishing human life.

Centuries later, this still feels remarkably relevant.

Another verse from the Thirukkural describes the qualities of a flourishing nation:

Freedom from disease, prosperity, abundant food, happiness, and security are the true wealth of a nation.

What fascinated me is that health isn’t described as merely the absence of illness. It’s closely connected with food security, social well-being, and a healthy society.

While reading (Noyillaa Neri) SIDDHA PSM BOOK, I noticed the same philosophy woven throughout the text.

Health wasn’t viewed as something that depended only on medicines.

It was influenced by the quality of air we breathe.
The purity of water we drink.

The design and ventilation of our homes.
Village planning.

Community sanitation.
Nutrition.
Daily routine.

Even music was described as having the power to calm the mind and reduce agitation, with classical Tamil literature cited to illustrate how sound could influence emotions and behaviour.

Reading this made me wonder…

Today, public health recognizes that housing, pollution, green spaces, nutrition, social support, and inequality all influence mental well-being.
Perhaps Siddha wasn’t asking only,

“How do we treat illness?”

Perhaps it was also asking,

“How do we create a way of living where health can flourish?”

As a Siddha physician, I find these intersections fascinating.

Not because ancient wisdom replaces modern science.

But because it reminds us that caring for the mind has never been only about the mind.
Sometimes, it begins with the world we build around it.

:speech_balloon: Do you think modern healthcare gives enough attention to the environmental and social factors that shape our mental well-being?
