Manas and sharira: the unignored relationship between mind and body according to Ayurveda

In today’s day and age, fortunately, health is not defined by just bodily or physical soundness. It includes physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well being of one’s life.

But, did you know that mental health was never ignored by the ancient Ayurvedic scholars and doctors? It still isn’t.

According to Ayurveda, there are various somatic diseases that occur because of mental and emotional factors being compromised. Also, according to some Ayurvedic texts, Manas or mind has a separate yet connected system just like respiratory or gastro-intestinal systems. There are numerous Ayurvedic treatments that focus on the fitness of mental health, Shirodhara is just one of them.

Isn’t it fascinating, that what we consider now as being healthy, was defined as health long ago by Ayurveda? Feel free to share your views.

Absolutely fascinating—Ayurveda’s holistic view recognized the deep mind–body connection centuries ago, long before modern health models caught up.

Practices like Shirodhara show that true health has always meant balance of body, mind, and spirit, not just absence of disease.

It’s interesting to see that the idea of health as a balance of body and mind is not new. Ayurveda has long emphasized the connection between mental well-being and physical health, reminding us that true wellness goes beyond the absence of disease and lies in overall harmony.
