Dental trauma in children

Children usually love to play, run, and explore new things, but in between those events, accidents or falls happen.

Adequate knowledge and awareness are required at that time to manage that situation.

What is Dental Trauma?

Dental trauma refers to injury to the teeth, gums, or surrounding tissues. In children, the most common causes are:

  • Falls while playing

  • Sports injuries

  • Road accidents

Common types of injuries:

  1. Chipped or fractured tooth
  2. Loosened or displaced tooth
  3. Completely knocked-out tooth (avulsion)

Emergency First Aid (VERY IMPORTANT)

If that is a permanent tooth—

  • Hold the top (crown) of the tooth; avoid touching the root part
  • Rinse it with tap water
  • Keep it in milk or saliva to save the tooth
  • Visit the dentist as soon as possible
  • Try to keep the tooth back in the socket

If that is a primary tooth-

  • milk tooth does not need reimplantation.’
  • Injuries can impact permanent teeth
  • Visit the dentist as soon as possible

Remember: Awareness today can prevent permanent damage tomorrow. Share this with parents and caregivers—you might help save a child’s smile!

So true

Children are particularly prone to dental traumatic injuries. It is vital that caregivers know exactly how to respond when an accident happens. Immediate, informed action can make all the difference in saving a tooth. This was much needed @Vaishali26

Be sure to consult dentist within 24 hours for best results.

It’s high time that schools have a dentist who specialises in sports dentistry/ pediatric dentists affiliated to their schools. Because, playground injuries are very common and timely intervention can help save a tooth . With the advancing scope of sports dentistry in India , conducting school camps and educating children and their parents regarding use of mouth guards during sports activities is also advised.

I saw a child hurt his teeth while playing football. In the panic, he became unconscious and was immediately taken to the hospital. It is indeed necessary for parents to be able to handle child in such crisis.
