Knocked out permanent tooth ? Here's what to do

A knocked out teeth( Avulsion) can be frightening whether during sports,a fall or from an accident.
If you act quick and smart ,you may be able to save the tooth.This is why the first 30 minutes matter.

Here are the simple step by step action that can be taken to save the teeth.

Step 1. Stay calm and find the teeth: Look for if the tooth is fallen out intact(as a whole piece) or has shattered.

Step 2. Should I clean the teeth: If dirty then ,yes it can be rinsed under running tap water or in milk to remove the debris but never scrub or dry it.

Step 3. Put back In : If the person injured is conscious with no other major injuries, try calming them down and place the tooth back in the mouth in proper position and ask the person to bite on it with a gauze.Ask for the help from person nearby if available.

Step 4. If not possible to place inside the mouth on your own or confused of how to do : Place the tooth in a glass of cold milk or saline solution or hanks balanced salt solution available.

Step 5. Get to the dentist immediately with the teeth in a proper solution:Go within 30 minutes as it is the golden period .More than 30 minutes may work but not always;So Sooner the better!

Step 6. What will the Dentist do : The dentist will then splint the tooth to stabilise it so that its not wobbly (usually for a time period of 2 weeks) and suture if any major cuts present ; This is later followed by a review and Root canal treatment appointments of that teeth.

Note:
This method of saving the knocked out teeth applies only to the permanent teeth and not the milk teeth.
If in doubt of whether its a milk or permanent teeth as in the case of toddler, its best to give it a go by placing it in milk and seeking dental care immediately.Let the dentist confirm it and take necessary action.
