Oral health of child: Myth vs reality

Children’s dental health is more important than we may think because it has a significant impact on general health.

:cross_mark:Myth: It will fall; it’s just milk teeth.

:white_check_mark:Reality: Children’s teeth are more than just temporary; they are essential for

  • Speech development,
  • Healthy eating,
  • Jaw growth,
  • Guiding permanent teeth into position.
  • Help to build confidence and self-esteem, as it has a role in the esthetic of the child.

Untreated decay in primary teeth can lead to pain and infection and can result in a disturbance in normal permanent tooth eruption.

:cross_mark:Myth: Kids don’t require dental care until they start to feel pain.

:white_check_mark:Reality: Prevention is better than a cure. Adequate maintenance and measurement reduce the need for future interventions.

Early decay can appear as white or yellow spots, black discoloration of teeth, and plaque accumulation on teeth.

Harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking, nail biting, and tongue thrusting, if detected at an early stage, help to prevent disturbances in normal occlusion and jaw growth.

:cross_mark:Myth: Dental visits are scary for children.

:white_check_mark:Reality: An early dental visit can help a child to adapt to the dental environment easily.

Adequate behavior modification and guidance help to make dental treatment an easy and good experience for a child.

A child can gradually develop a healthy and positive attitude toward dental treatment.

:cross_mark:Myth: Sugar is the only cause of cavities.:white_check_mark:Reality: Cavities are a complex illness.

There are many factors responsible for cavities—

  • Type, amount, and stickiness of sugar
  • Frequency of sugar intake
  • Flouride level of teeth
  • Feeding habits of child
  • Genetic factor
  • Brushing habit
  • Saliva quality and amount
  • Other harmful habits such as thumb sucking, mouth breathing, and tongue thrusting

Pediatric dentistry is more than just treatment; it also involves prevention, education, and the development of healthy habits that last a lifetime.

And it begins with raising awareness and addressing misconceptions.
