Degrees vs Skills: What Matters More Today?

Many colleges and universities promise skill development, career guidance, and job-ready training. But how many of us actually feel prepared for the real world?

While some institutions offer strong support, others seem to focus more on grades and placements than on real growth. Soft skills, industry exposure, mental health guidance, and career planning often get left behind.

Do you feel your institution is truly preparing you for life after graduation in terms of skills, jobs, and direction?
What’s missing, and what would you like to see more of?

In my opinion, the demand of ā€˜skills’ has increased several fold over a decade.

Courses, both online and offline, strategize these days to teach and cultivate skills of practical work with strong concepts over lengthy degrees with a spoonful knowledge of various subtopics.
The skills are paying the rents and feeding mouths these days and degrees have turned into a mere formality to add a feather to your cap.
Often, the degree pertaining to a field is succeeded by skills of another field which is new to the turf and takes the job market by storm.
I believe with a clear path in mind, and undivided attention paired with some hard work in skill development, can help youth today boost their career trajectories.

Nowadays skills are mandatory to all fields but every one should have degree. On the base of degree you can apply and on basis of skills you will get it .
So both matters in my opinion.

True, Both Skill and degree are important.Degree is an entry point through which you can apply for any job but Skill is needed to get the Job

Talking about the Degree today everyone one about to that but the graduate don’t have that skill that should be they possesing .
So according to me both degree and skill set are important as degree is a entry point to the career.

Skill adds more value than degree. Degree is like just human body but skills are like backbone to the human body which plays major role by doing every activity we wanted to do.

ā€œDegreesā€ are definitely important, but they mostly open up just the door to the room of future career, but ā€œSkillsā€ actually decide how long you can stay in that room. Through a degree certificate one can get noticed, but it always comes down to one’s ability to perform, create, solve, and adapt that make the personal profile more relevant. A degree is a constant, but skills need to be upgraded and learnt as the field of Science and Technology grows and evolves each day. Right now, we are in a world where job titles and job descriptions are changing faster than the study curriculum, that’s why along with a valid degree, updated skills are essential.

Honestly, while our institution provides decent academic knowledge, it often lacks in real-world preparation. There’s limited focus on soft skills, industry exposure, mental health support, and career planning. I wish we had more practical workshops, mentorship programs, and sessions on how to navigate life beyond textbooks like interviews, communication, and work-life balance.

I believe both are necessary, a degree is proof of discipline annd reliability in your attitude towards your work, because college demands structure and compliance. Skills are indicators of drive and dedication to your work outside of the conventional or necessary demands.

I think both Degree and skills are of great importance. A degree has become an exceptional factor to get a job and in the same way organizations prefers sufficiently skilled candidates. So, I think it is up to the college/ institution to give equal importance in training the students with the much needed skillset associated with their area of academics alongside their theoretical knowledge.

As far as my college is concerned, they provided us extensive career guidance programs and placement assistance, but fell slightly short in providing us with promising skill development techniques and job-ready training.

Now a days skill is very important but degree is a first step .Theoritical knowledge is required in every aspects

No college only gave us a certification for completion of graduation.. No skills were teached for us in our graduation.college gave us the knowledge about the subject but not about the practical knowledge.

I think my institution does a good job of providing foundational knowledge and some practical skills, but there’s definitely room for improvement in preparing us for life after graduation. There’s a gap when it comes to real-world application—more internships, hands-on projects, and career-focused workshops could make a big difference. Additionally, more emphasis on soft skills like communication, networking, and adaptability would help bridge the gap between academic life and the workforce. I’d love to see more career counseling services and industry collaborations to guide students in finding their direction and securing jobs.

For me both are important. Degree what your earn and skill what you learn.

The college degree is a basic criteria to be entitled or say a validation that you are eligible for the job role. But SKILLS do matter a lot. Even for completing the graduation there are lots of skills required. In Skills you have to be good in soft skills and hard skills. I would suggest that choose your destination and then accordingly start developing your skills from the beginning of college days.
