Caffeine, Dependence, and Cutting Back: A Personal Note

Caffeine is the world’s most widely consumed psychoactive substance, known to improve alertness by antagonizing adenosine receptors. But regular intake can lead to dependence and subtle adverse effects.

I used to have two cups of coffee daily. Over time, I noticed persistent eyelid twitching (myokymia), often linked to excess caffeine, stress, and fatigue. It was minor but frequent enough to be noticeable.

After reducing my intake, the difference was clear: fewer twitches and more stable energy levels.

What this highlights:

  • Even moderate caffeine can cause side effects in sensitive individuals

  • Symptoms like eye twitching can be early warning signs

  • Reducing intake can improve neuromuscular stability and sleep quality
