Blunt injuries

This issue is faced by many of us but is yet neglected by everyone.

Q. What is blunt injury or trauma?

A. It is a form of physical injury that is caused by a forceful non-penetrating impact that compresses, stretches, or tears the tissues without breaking the skin. It may be caused by falls, motor vehicle accidents, or direct hits to the area that cause internal bleeding, organ damage, fractures, or internal tissue damage or tears.

Why is addressing this issue important?

  • I had a case today where a football player had a ball hit him near the liver region. He was complaining of severe pain and was not able to stand, but after some time the pain subsided, and he still wanted to play, but we didnโ€™t approve of it. There are chances for blunt injury, which needs to be evaluated.
  • Similar case where the ball had hit the head, causing the concussion and lack of consciousness leading to blunt injury trauma. It needs to be evaluated.
  • Cases of tendonitis for the shoulder that have some traumatic cause for the condition, like a fall or hit, also need to be evaluated for the blunt trauma.
  • Some cases where a sudden hit is experienced to the part leading to internal fracture or tissue damage are also blunt trauma and need to be evaluated by the doctor.

The reason to get this topic is a lot of sports players as well as common people experience this kind of major hit or fall, and they let it go untreated and ignore it, which may further lead to major issues and become life-threatening. Hence, always get yourself checked for initial trauma and get it treated before it becomes major.

If there is some tissue damage due to a fall or hit, apply an ice pack immediately for the time being and visit the concerned doctor immediately.

If there is an injury in the visceral area or in the area of organs and if you see bluish discoloration on the skin, immediately call for a doctor or take the concerned person to the nearby hospital for a checkup. Even if there is no bluish discoloration, still take the person to the doctor for a checkup.

Q. Have you ever ignored a blunt injury in your daily life? Or have you ever visited the doctor for the blunt injury?

This is a very relevant and often overlooked issue. Many people tend to ignore blunt injuries once the pain subsides, assuming everything is fine, especially in sports or daily activities. However, as you highlighted, internal damage may not show immediate or visible signs and can become serious if left untreated. Early evaluation by a doctor after any significant hit or fall is crucial to prevent complications. Awareness, timely first aid like ice application, and medical consultation can make a big difference in avoiding long-term or life-threatening consequences.

Blunt trauma may look minor on the outside, but internal bleeding, concussion, or organ injury can be life-threatening if ignored. Timely evaluation after any significant hit or fall, especially in sports, can truly make the difference between recovery and serious complications.

Such an important topic that needs awareness, usually blunt injuries are never treated in the right way and always ignored, whereas they cause more pain that lasts for longer durations, and yes, blunt injury near the vital organs must always be provided with immediate medical attention, as blood stagnation can cause various complications.
