Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a commonly used physiotherapy technique that uses low
voltage electrical currents to relieve pain. It is widely used for conditions such as muscle pain, arthritis, sports injuries, and chronic back pain.
Benefits of TENS Therapy
-
Helps reduce pain without medication
-
Improves muscle relaxation and comfort
-
Non invasive and easy to use
-
Can support rehabilitation and recovery
-
Portable devices allow home use
Drawbacks of TENS Therapy
-
Pain relief is often temporary
-
May not work effectively for everyone
-
Skin irritation can occur due to electrode pads
-
Incorrect usage may reduce effectiveness
-
Not recommended for patients with pacemakers or certain medical conditions
TENS therapy is most effective when combined with proper physiotherapy exercises and rehabilitation programs under professional guidance.
Should non drug therapies like TENS be promoted more in pain management programs?

TENS therapy is now increasingly used in dentistry, particularly in patients with excessive muscle activity, such as those with clenching and teeth grinding habits (bruxism). The electrodes are strategically placed to stimulate muscles innervated by the trigeminal nerve, facial nerve, and spinal accessory nerve, thereby reducing hyperactivity and relieving muscle tension.

Mostly in TMJ i have seen these cases in our physiotherapy department!
Interesting post. For the patients who are not compatible to the medicine, this can be an alternative.

I think non-drug therapies like TENS should be promoted more because they can help manage pain safely and reduce unnecessary dependence on medications in some patients.

Yes medicine of movement is better than chemical intake!
Non-drug therapies like TENS can be promoted in pain management as they may help reduce pain and limit medication use. However, effectiveness varies, and some people may not feel comfortable or get enough relief. They should be used as part of a personalized, balanced treatment plan rather than a standalone solution.
