Lignocaine: Medical use and Misuse

Lignocaine also called Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic used to relieve pain in medical procedures such as minor surgeries, dental work, or wound care. It is commonly available as a gel, spray, jelly, or injection.

Medical Uses

  1. Numbing tissue during dental, surgical, or dermatological procedures.
  2. Relief of burns, ulcers, or sore throat.
  3. Pain relief during catheterisation or endoscopy.

Non-Medical Misuse

Misuse occurs when lignocaine is applied without medical guidance, often for convenience or cosmetic purposes.

By Beauticians:

  • Numbing the ear lobes to reduce pain while piercing ears or wearing heavy earrings.
  • Reducing discomfort during waxing, threading, or minor cosmetic procedures.

Daily life uses:

  • Numbing minor injuries, burns, or insect bites unnecessarily.
  • Over-the-counter application without understanding dose limits.

Risks

  1. It can mask pain, leading to injury.
  2. Increases the risk of allergic reactions, numbness, or tissue damage.
  3. Excessive absorption may cause dizziness, tremors, irregular heartbeat, or seizures.
  4. It can delay proper treatment for serious conditions.

Lignocaine is safe when used medically, but non-medical or cosmetic misuse can be dangerous.
