Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome: A Hidden Risk Behind a Salon Chair

A visit to the beauty salon is usually associated with relaxation and self-care. However, in rare cases, an improper neck position during hair washing at salon sinks has been linked to a condition known as Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome (BPSS).

This occurs when the neck is extended backward for a prolonged period without adequate support, potentially affecting blood flow to the brain.

What Happens in Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome?

When the neck is excessively bent backward, it may compress or injure the vertebral arteries, which supply blood to the brain.
This can sometimes lead to arterial damage or reduced blood flow, increasing the risk of a stroke.
Although uncommon, the consequences can be serious if not recognized early.

Possible Warning Signs

Symptoms may appear during or shortly after a salon visit and may include:
● dizziness or vertigo
● headache or neck pain
● blurred or double vision
● slurred speech
● difficulty walking or weakness on one side of the body
These symptoms require immediate medical attention.

Diagnosis

Doctors may diagnose this condition using:
β€’ neurological examination
β€’ CT or MRI scans
β€’ Doppler ultrasound to evaluate blood flow in neck arteries
Early diagnosis improves outcomes.

Treatment and Management

Treatment depends on the severity of arterial injury and stroke risk. It may include:
● medications to prevent blood clots
● monitoring and neurological care
● rehabilitation if neurological symptoms develop
Most importantly, early recognition and treatment are critical.

Prevention

Simple precautions can help reduce risk:
● proper neck support at salon wash stations
● avoiding prolonged neck hyperextension
● adjusting chair and sink height for comfort
● informing the stylist if neck discomfort occurs
Awareness Matters
Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome is rare, but awareness helps both clients and salon professionals take simple steps to protect neck health and brain circulation.

Its Unfortunate that you have to gone through that stuff, @Anushree_Poojari2025 ,people in parlor need to use neck support ,thank you sharing your experience.

Well said @nikitagupta.bioinfo ,along with neck support awareness and neck stretch, precautions and preventive techniques are to be implemented

Very rare but saw a case with sudden vertigo after salon. It’s worth remembering posterior circulation symptoms can be pretty non-specific initially. Even brief hyperextension can be enough in some people. Simple soft neck support during hair wash could probably prevent most of these.

Very well explained. I learned something new today from this post. No wonder my neck used to hurt whenever I sat in that uncomfortable position. I think the public definitely needs more awareness about this to prevent problems in the long run.

Awareness is the key to prevent this . Due to prolonged neck hyper extension brain does not receive oxygen due to pressing of artery which could lead to a stroke .
