BDS Salary: The Harsh Reality

After completing 5 years of BDS, new graduates are often offered 10000/- or less in some clinics, while front desk receptionists at the same hospitals may earn the same or more. Why is this the case? Who is to blame? What are your thoughts on the situation, and what can be done about it? Should graduates just accept these offers for experience?

This is the scenario of almost all of the allied and healthcare sectors and that’s so unfortunate.

I don’t know why it is so?

Proper standardization is needed.

Also, accepting such offers will always lead to more degradation. We all have put all our hardwork on those 5 years and we should know our worth.

Sadly, this is the reality and if u end up taking a break to pursue for mds preps… your experience is invalidated as well..
the main reason is the saturation of dentists in India. especially in cities.

Yes, Ironically I had joined BDS as someone told me that dentists make a lot of money :rofl:
I guess that person meant outside India. There are so many BDS folks because they don’t get medical seat, they take up BDS just to get the degree.

sad to listen this , every field have same problem, giving lakhs and getting nothing is sad

That’s so true. But when I come across job postings like “Dental Assistant – ₹12,000” and “Dentist – ₹15,000”, it’s honestly heartbreaking.

It’s case with most paramedics, newer reforms and standardized pay scale range are a need of time.

It was devastating to realise we earn only this much after joining clinics. There are people who work for no salary for many years in dentistry, just to learn skills and also because they dont pay them anything. I worked for few months like that and later asked for a pay and got 7000 as my first salary. Also while i was working in a clinic i realised receptionist and i had same amount of salary. This is a very sad reality in dentistry field.

It was heartbreaking to know about the salary ranges after completing BDS or MDS. It’s even more when I realized that dentist with 5years experience also earns around 20k or 25k.

Its the sad reality.

Blame goes to us only as we said yes to do that work as we are in need of it and than senior dentist take advantage of that.

Yes, I agree with you. It is a sad reality that to become a dentist, students spend 10-30 lakhs. In return, what they get is just 10k per month.

YES, This is a the harsh reality where most educated people are not at par in terms of salary with other specility doctors .Although the knowledge and study is same as MBBS still there is lot of difference when you you apply for jobs. There are more dental colleges than govt and private jobs and even govt doesnt take any step for this

Not only BDS, every healthcare professional facing this issue during their employment initiation stage.

The reduced salary is due to the decreased demand for dentists, as the patient-to-dentist ratio has significantly dropped. This may be the result of the rapid increase in the number of private dental colleges. Consequently, with more dentists entering the field and limited job opportunities, the demand has declined, leading to lower salaries. Many dentists are now willing to work for reduced pay due to this oversupply.

After spending lakhs of money on dental education, you will finally step into the real world where everyone around you thinks you are earning a huge amount, which is very disappointing, by getting paid the same as a receptionist in the same clinic.

Yes the reality is unfair. People who dream of a doctor degree become disheartened and join BDS as a way to cope up and yearn others respect as a doctor. But though they earn the degree and knowledge they are still not acknowledged and are often mistreated even within their own community. This mistreatment is expressed in the form of low paying jobs which makes them hate their job and abandon their dreams. Proper standardization and improvisation of the decade old syllabus may help improve the livelihood of dentists
