Question for the dental community:

After investing 5 years in earning a BDS degree and developing the skills to diagnose and treat patients independently, why do many fresh dentists still begin their careers working 10 AM–8 PM for ₹15,000–25,000 per month?

Is it because of:

  • Limited job opportunities?

  • An oversupply of graduates?

  • Low public awareness of preventive oral healthcare?

  • Financial pressure to gain experience?

  • Or are there deeper systemic issues?

This isn’t about comparing dentistry with any other profession. It’s about understanding why a healthcare profession that requires years of education, clinical training, and carries significant responsibility often starts with such low compensation.

What changes do you think are needed to create a more sustainable and rewarding career path for BDS graduates while ensuring quality patient care?

I’m interested in hearing perspectives from dentists, educators, healthcare leaders, policymakers, and patients.

Happy to see many young dentists are speaking out, without settling for something that is unacceptable.

I feel there are disparities in every step, there’s no one to blame here. Right from the educational institutions, to well established clinic owners, to students who lack skill, everyone in the list is responsible in least possible way.

If our future plan is to put dental clinic. It is fine. If not. We should not waste our precious time in assisting in clinic. Better need to upgrade ourselves or to change the field.

And yes, we should not accept the low pay. We are in this matrix . Nothing can change
