Autoimmune Gastritis : When Your Stomach Eats Itself

Recently I Discovered that Internet Personality Named Bryan Johnson diagnosed with a rare disease named Autoimmune Gastritis. From then everyone wants to know about the Autoimmune Gastritis.

Introduction: A Autoimmune Gastritis is chronic inflammatory condition where immune system attacks on stomach cell especially acid producing cell causing inflammation of stomach inner lining and later atrophy.

The Human stomach made from following especial types of cells:
• parietal cells : Secrete hydrochloric acid, Intrinsic factor for Vitamin B12 absorption
• Chief cells : Secrete enzyme called pepsinogen
• Mucous cells : Secrete mucus
• Enteroendocrine cells : Secretes hormones (gastrin,somatostatin)

In Autoimmune gastritis immune system mistaken stomach parietal cells and some time chief cells and destroy them which leads to reduction in stomach acid and also decreases the absorption of Vitamin B12 and later inner lining of stomach get shrinks and cause atrophy of the stomach.

Sign and Symptoms : A person with autoimmune gastritis usually asymptomatic for long years,The symptoms and signs totally depends on the speed of progression of the diseases. Few symptoms are as follows:

  1. Pernicious anemia ( A type of anemia due to lack of Vitamin B12)
  2. Digestive symptoms like mild upper abdominal pain, bloating,Indigestion
  3. Nutrient deficiency

As this is a Autoimmune condition so there are no any specific medication given. Focus is only on to maintain body’s nutrition level, advising healthy diet.If the anatomy of stomach changed in extreme cases due to atrophy then surgery can be done.

Important Question raised : How can a person like Bryan Johansson have such disease? who focused on Healthy lifestyle.
Exact reason of Autoimmune gastritis is not known, Family history, Genetic Factors could be the reason of this rare disease.

Out of my understanding, I think autoimmune diseases can affect even people who appear physically healthy. While the exact causes are prolonged stress, depression which may influence gene expression and immune function in individuals, leading to autoimmune conditions.

A healthy lifestyle can lower the risks of many diseases, but it cannot prevent every condition. Although the cause of autoimmune gastritis is unknown, genetic factors, environmental factors and constant stress may play a role in causing autoimmune disorders.

Very insightful post…!!! autoimmune conditions are strongly driven by genetics and immune dysregulation, meaning even the most optimized biohacking or ultra-healthy lifestyle can’t fully prevent them.

Very true, Autoimmune gastritis reminds us that even the healthiest lifestyle cannot prevent every disease. Nutrition, exercise, and healthy habits greatly reduce the risk of many illnesses, but autoimmune diseases can still occur because of complex interactions between genetics, the immune system, and environmental factors that are not yet fully understood. Good health habits remain valuable as they improve overall well-being and may help with recovery and disease management, even if they cannot eliminate every risk.

The actual cause of this disease is unknown. It can’t be cured either. But its manageble by supplements, a low-protein, low-spicy diet and routine health monitoring. Nice and informative post. Thanks for sharing with us.

I found this topic very interesting. Autoimmune gastritis is a good reminder that even a healthy lifestyle cannot completely prevent autoimmune or genetic conditions. However, more research is needed to understand the exact causes, and early diagnosis can help manage nutrient deficiencies and complications effectively.

Autoimmune diseases don’t follow a random protocol, genetic factors and environmental triggers, excessive stress can be the possible triggers. Even tho a person follows healthy lifestyle as many celebrities came up with autoimmune disease in recent times . It was a good post.
