Are we consuming multivitamins as habit replacements?

Are you one of those people who thinks that for every unbalanced lifestyle, you can take a vitamin supplement?

Let me give you examples:

  1. Lack of sleep: take a melatonin supplement

  2. Loss of appetite: pop a vitamin B and zinc combination supplement

  3. Dull face: start with vitamin C

  4. Weak bones, joint pain: begin with a calcium tablet or a vitamin D3 sachet

  5. Brittle hair, hair fall: searches for a biotin supplement and begins tomorrow

Yes, there is a vitamin supplement for all the problems that you can diagnose by yourself, but is it even required? Is your self-diagnosis correct? Are all the issues in your body caused by a single deficiency?

The straight answer is NO. Our body is made of approximately 206 bones, 78 organs, 80 billion neurons, and 40 trillion cells, which coordinate amongst each other to perform our daily activities and make us living humans. So, expecting one straight thing to cure any issue is stupid.

The food-grade multivitamins are now being sold as colorful pills in the market with no clinical trials or meta-analysis reports.

Always consult a doctor for any issues, get your blood tests done, and reach a clinical diagnosis before starting any sort of medications, even if they are multivitamins.

People have also started popping multivitamins as a style statement. This is further boosted by influencers sharing their “wellness routines” on social media.

This is happening because we look for options which are more convenient to us rather than choosing what is actually right !

This is commonly observed. Supplements should be taken wisely and only with proper medical advice.

Well said!

Supplements do have some uses but that doesn’t mean on has to completely depend on them as they also have side effects. One has to consult doctor before taking any supplements.

There definitely needs to be more awareness around this, really appreciate you bringing it up.

Yes it’s true, we should always consult a doctor before consuming any kind of medicines or multivitamins and tests should be performed which will detect the deficiencies in our body.

Yes. Hypervitaminosis is a toxic condition caused by over consumption and accumulation of vitamins in the body esp. Fat soluble vitamins. Severe conditions may also lead to liver or kidney damage. Always consult a doctor and ask when to take a supplement and when to stop it.

Excellent breakdown. Supplements should be an adjunct to a healthy lifestyle, not a replacement for it.

Underlying causes should be first determined before starting any treatment and always consult doctor for that.
