Are healthcare students prepared enough for real patient communication?

Healthcare education focuses heavily on scientific knowledge, clinical concepts, and treatment protocols. But when students interact with real patients for the first time, communication can sometimes feel more challenging than expected.

Explaining diseases, reassuring anxious patients, and answering questions in simple language require skills beyond textbooks.

This made me realize that effective healthcare is not only about knowing the correct treatment, but also about building trust and communication with patients.

Question:

Do you think communication training should have a bigger role in healthcare education?

What all methods do you think would be effective in teaching students about effective communication?

MBH/DB

Yes, communication training should have a bigger role in healthcare education. It is important for gaining patient’s trust in the treatment and shows accountability and reliability of the healthcare personnel. It gives a sense of security and trust to the patients. I think holding group discussions and patient-doctor interaction demos or activities involving interaction with general masses can help in teaching effective communication.
