Generally whenever we suffer from any allergy we used to see the name of the medicine only whatever we have, not that what does the medicine actually contains and in which condition it should be used.
Can we use same anti-allergic medicine in every case ?
Cetirizine- It is an H1 antihistamine drug. It blocks the effect of histamine and controls the symptoms. It is used in the symptoms like Allergy, sneezing, running nose, itching and hives. It can cause sleepiness and should be avoid during driving and alcohol.
Levocetirizine- It is also an H1 Antihistamine and can be used in the conditions like cetirizine. It is more potent than cetirizine and does not cause sleepiness.
Fexofenadine- It is also an H1 Antihistamine used in allergic rhinitis and hives. Generally it causes low sedation but individual response may vary. Fexofenadine should be always to take with water. Orange, apple or grape fruit juice can decrease its absorption.
Desloratadine- It is also an H1 Antihistamine used for allergic rhinitis and hives. Its common adult dose is 5 mg once daily but in liver and kidney problem doses are decided by the doctors. It can cause dry mouth, fatigue and sleepiness.
Pheniramine- It is a first generation antihistamine and is used in allergic symptoms like itching. It is more sedative in nature and drowsiness increases with alcohol. Individual with glaucoma or urination problem should first consult to a doctor before having it.
Hydroxyzine- It is also a first generation antihistamine and is used in itching problem. It may cause strong sedation and can affect the heart rhythm i.e. QT interval. Patients with heart problems should not take it by self medicating.
Montelukast- It is a Leukotriene receptor antagonist used mainly in asthma and allergic rhinitis like cases. It is not a first choice tablet for simple allergy. It causes safety alerts regarding mood and behavioural changes.
