How the Widely Used Medicine Works: Cetirizine

Cetirizine is a widely used medicine that helps relieve symptoms of allergic reactions and acts as a potent antihistamine. But what is the mechanism of action of cetirizine?

During an allergic reaction, mast cells release histamine, which produces common allergic symptoms, including runny nose, redness, swelling, sneezing, and itching.

Cetirizine blocks H₁ histamine receptors, inhibiting the effects of histamine released during allergic reactions. This reduces vasodilation, capillary permeability, and sensory nerve stimulation, leading to decreased allergic symptoms.
