Anxiety or Stress – Do You Know the Difference?

Both anxiety and stress affect our mental health, but they’re not the same.

Stress → Usually has an external trigger (exams, deadlines, arguments). It often goes away once the situation resolves.

Anxiety → Persists even without a clear reason. It brings constant worry, restlessness, and sometimes physical symptoms like palpitations or sweating.

Recognizing the difference is the first step towards getting the right help.

Have you ever mistaken stress for anxiety (or vice versa)? How did you deal with it?

That’s such an important discussion! Many times, I’ve confused stress with anxiety because the feelings overlap. Taking a break, practicing deep breathing, and talking to someone I trust usually helps me figure out what I’m actually feeling and how to handle it better.

Understanding that the situation which is causing the stress is temporary is helpful in alleviating stress. Anxiety is difficult to deal with as it comes at the most unexpected time. As you mentioned that anxiety may not have a clear cause and thereby is difficult to navigate through it. Would love to know some tips on it.

I feel like anxiety is something that can be seen in the smallest actions or matters. It comes from inside. Whereas stress is more externally related; when the external factor is removed, it automatically goes away.

I used to struggle with anxiety and stress. Stress is temporary, like the pressure felt right before an exam or while giving a speech on stage. After those moments pass, we usually return to normal. However, anxiety feels different; it’s an overwhelming sense of worry or fear that feels like a storm brewing inside you. It can leave you on edge, constantly anticipating something bad might happen, even if there’s no real reason for it. I find myself often overthinking things.

I’ve confused stress with anxiety many times.

That time i don’t talk to anyone. I just go in balcony with chai sit their drink chai and think nothing. Then decide now what to do.
