A surge in heart disease deaths, particularly among young people, has been observed in India after the Covid-19 pandemic. Studies have suggested that people who were infected with Covid-19, especially with severe cases, have significantly increased risk for cardiovascular diseases, as the virus can trigger a systemic inflammatory response, damaging the blood vessels and increasing the risk of blood clots, thereby disrupting the blood flow to the heart and causing heart attack. Studies also showed that the virus has the potential to directly damage the heart cells, thereby weakening heart muscles and increasing the risk of heart attacks and heart failure.
Along with the effect of virus on heart health, lifestyle changes during pandemic also seem to have a key role in the spike of heart diseases and deaths among young people. Lockdowns, social restriction and increased stress during the pandemic could have negatively impacted the heart health by promoting unhealthy habits, such as poor diet, reduced physical activity, increased smoking and alcohol consumption.
