A sudden surge in cardiovascular-related deaths in Hassan district, Karnataka, has raised state-wide alarm. Between May and June 2025, 22 people, including several under 45, reportedly died of suspected heart attacks during routine activities. Most fatalities occurred outside hospitals, with limited post-mortems conducted. A six-member medical committee comprising cardiologists and public health officials has been formed to investigate possible causes.
Preliminary findings show no single factor, though experts are studying links to post-Covid complications, vaccines, stress, and lifestyle factors. Dr. C.N. Manjunath, former Director of Jayadeva Institute, described it as “an epidemiological concern, not a panic situation.” Authorities are conducting epidemiological mapping, toxicological analysis, and verbal autopsies to understand the trend. The event has renewed calls for preventive cardiology, lifestyle awareness, and early heart screening especially among the young, who increasingly face the silent threat of heart disease.
