What’s actually happening:
Most of the body’s serotonin is made by special cells in your gut lining.
This gut serotonin mainly helps move food through your digestive system — it controls muscle squeezing in your intestines.
It also sends signals up to the brain through the vagus nerve (the nerve connecting gut and brain).
Here’s the key part: gut serotonin cannot travel to the brain. There’s a protective barrier around the brain that blocks it. So it doesn’t directly boost brain serotonin the way people assume.
Why this matters:
The gut and the brain each make and use their own separate serotonin. They don’t share the same supply.
So gut serotonin affects mood only in indirect ways — through nerve signals, immune activity, and gut bacteria — not by traveling straight to the brain.
This is an important point to clear up online, because the “90%” fact often gets used to tell a simpler story than what science actually shows.
One real connection worth mentioning: gut bacteria help process tryptophan, an amino acid your body needs to make serotonin. So gut health can still matter for brain serotonin — just not in the direct way most posts claim.
