Your 20s Are Not Too Early for Health Checks

I’m in my 20s too, so the idea of preventive healthcare often feels like something we can worry about “later.” But while working on this story, I realised how much there is to learn about taking care of your health before something feels wrong.

Speaking with Dr. Aman Kumar, Associate Consultant, Internal Medicine, helped me look at preventive healthcare differently. From blood pressure and blood sugar to mental health, vaccinations, oral health, physical activity and lifestyle habits, prevention is not necessarily about getting a long list of tests every year. It is about understanding your risks and knowing what deserves attention.

One thing that stayed with me was the idea that our 20s are not too early to think about long-term health. They can actually be the years when many of our lifelong health habits take shape.

For this International Youth Day 2026, I explored what young adults should actually monitor, which health checks may be relevant in their 20s, and what we should not simply dismiss because we are “young and healthy.”
