World Health Day on 7th April

This year’s World Health Day (April 7th) marks 77 years of the inception of the World Health Organization (WHO). The theme is “My Health, My Right”.

Let’s discuss some of the major health related challenges the world is facing today.

Despite advancements in chemotherapy, immunotherapy and gene therapy, many cancers remain difficult to treat. We are still facing numerous challenges in making these therapies more effective, accessible, and affordable.

Access to healthcare should be declared a fundamental right- first thing first!

In fact, the below mentioned information sums up it well:

“The Constitution of India does not expressly recognize Right to Health as a fundamental right under Part III of the Constitution (Fundamental Rights). However, through judicial interpretation, this has been read into the fundamental right to life & personal liberty (Article 21) and is now considered an inseparable part of the Right to Life.

Article 23 of the Constitution of India also indirectly contributes to protecting the Right to Health as it prohibits human trafficking and child labour.” (from a source)

  1. NCDs – Rising heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
  2. Infectious diseases – COVID-19, AMR, and vaccine gaps.
  3. Mental health – Growing stress, depression, and care gaps.
  4. Healthcare inequity – Limited access in low-income areas.
  5. Climate change – Air pollution, extreme weather, health risks.
  6. Malnutrition – Both undernutrition and obesity persist.
  7. Pandemic preparedness – Strengthening global health security.
