International Day of Universal Health Coverage: Every year, International Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day is celebrated to encourage fair access to healthcare for all. Governments, health organizations, and civil society come together under the umbrella of UHC2030 to assess progress and expedite the pursuit of universal health care.
Date and Significance: The 2012 UN resolution calling on nations to promote universal health insurance and equal access to healthcare is commemorated on December 12th as UHC Day. As the globe works toward the 2030 UHC goal, the day shows both accomplishments and enduring gaps.
UHC Day 2025 Theme: “Unaffordable health costs? We’re sick of it!” The 2025 theme highlights the growing expense of healthcare, which pushes people to put off or forego treatment, plunging families into hardship. It demands immediate changes to provide financial security and affordability.

India’s Progress Toward UHC: With national initiatives to increase access and lessen financial burden, India has made significant progress toward universal health coverage. Ayushman Bharat, a flagship program, combines the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) to offer financial security during hospital stays with Health and Wellness Centers for comprehensive primary care. This strategy is in line with India’s overarching objectives of improving basic healthcare and reducing out-of-pocket medical costs.
Conclusion: The idea that healthcare is a basic human right is reaffirmed on Universal Health Coverage Day. The 2025 celebration urges cooperation to guarantee that everyone has access to high-quality, reasonably priced healthcare.
