Do you look younger than other people who share your chronological age? It is not because you are more unique than them. This is owing to your overall fitness (biological and physiological health), also known as basal metabolic rate, which is higher compared to the same-age population. Let’s understand about “metabolic age.”
If you are 35 and your body functions like a 24-year-old’s, that indicates your metabolic age is lower than your chronological age. It means you have a fast metabolism, efficient calorie-burning capability, balanced lean muscle mass, and a good physique.
Basal Metabolic Rate: the minimum number of calories the body requires to perform basic biological functions such as blood circulation, cellular production, respiration, and regulating body temperature at rest.
Note: Owing to the body’s decreasing ability to burn calories, the basal metabolic rate drops by 1-2% in every decade, resulting in age-related loss of organ activity and lean muscle mass.
Important facts about BMR -
A man’s BMR is higher as compared to a woman. Men have a larger body surface area and lean muscle mass, requiring higher calories to burn fat.
Genetic builds play a crucial role, and BMR varies from person to person.
Low caloric intake and starvation slow down metabolism to conserve energy.
Health implications like osteoporosis, hypothyroidism, sarcopenia, etc. invite a low BMR.
Laziness reduces overall energy generation and expenditure, resulting in muscle atrophy.
Tips to maintain BMR:
Follow resistance training
Nutrition and protein intake
Stay active.
Get quality sleep.
Avoid starvation diets.
Stay hydrated.
Manage stress
