“Why we get Angry when we are Hungry”

Have you ever wondered why a person becomes so angry when he/she is not getting anything to eat or we can say he/she is hungry. They get irritated more easily, even i do the same thing. Whenever i feel hungry it feels like i don’t want to do anything, i just want to eat something first.

Do you know the psychology behind this ?

Hunger+Angry= Hangry

As we know our body and brain needs glucose to perform its work. Our brain needs 20% of whatever glucose we are consuming. But when we are empty stomach the glucose level drops down it triggers the stress hormone and disturbs the brain in regulating the emotions.

Due to low blood sugar level the brain starts giving signal to the rest of the body and starts secreting Adrenaline, Cortisol and Neuropeptide Y. These chemicals alert you regarding your hunger and also releases the anger enzymes and anger protein.

Adrenaline and cortisol are the fight and flight hormones that increases the heart rate and leads to high alert. This will convert these response to anger and irritation.

Neuropeptide Y generally stimulates the appetite but it is also linked to aggression and negative behavioural action or response.

That is why we become angry when we are hungry.

Have you experienced something like this. What do you used to do in situation like this?

Right! Hypoglycemia contributes to the issue to some extent.

I think most of us have experienced being hangry. It’s interesting to know what actually happens in the body when we are hungry.
