Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Although TB is curable, successful treatment requires taking the prescribed medicines regularly and completing the entire course of treatment.
Many patients start feeling better after a few weeks of treatment and may think they are cured. However, feeling better does not mean all the TB bacteria have been eliminated. Stopping treatment early or skipping doses allows the remaining bacteria to survive, increasing the risk of the disease returning.
Incomplete or irregular treatment can also lead to drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), where the bacteria become resistant to commonly used anti-TB medicines. Drug-resistant TB is much more difficult to treat, often requiring longer treatment, more medications, and a higher risk of side effects.
How can TB treatment be completed successfully?

One of the most important aspects of TB treatment is to ensure that the patient is well-educated about his/her medical condition and complies with the treatment protocol. Recurrence of TB and sometimes drug-resistant TB is quite challenging and serious too; thus, TB should be managed well during its first incidence only.
