Termed petrichor (coined in 1964 by Australian researchers Bear and Thomas), the scent is driven primarily by geosmin, a bicyclic alcohol produced by soil-dwelling Streptomyces bacteria.

The Mechanism:
​Microbial Synthesis: During dry periods, Streptomyces produce spores and accumulate volatile organic metabolites.
​Aerosolization: When raindrops strike porous soil, tiny air bubbles get trapped at the impact zone, rise to the surface, and burst, launching microscopic aerosols of geosmin and plant-derived oils into the air.
​Human Sensitivity: Human olfactory receptors are evolutionary tuned to geosmin—we can detect it at concentrations as low as 5 parts per trillion.
