That Earthy Smell After the First Rain

That Earthy Smell After the First Rain?

It’s Bacteria at Work!

•Ever noticed the nostalgic, earthy aroma that rises from dry ground after the first raindrops fall? That smell is called petrichor and it’s not just romantic, it’s scientific

The real cause?

A soil-dwelling bacterium called Streptomyces.

It releases a compound known as geosmin, which gives soil that signature smell.

When rain falls on parched soil, it traps and releases geosmin into the air our noses immediately detect it, even in very small concentrations!

Interesting Fact:

We humans can smell geosmin at an amazing 5 parts per trillion that’s extremely sensitive!

So next time you get a whiff of that fresh post rain aroma, recall: It’s nature’s microbial perfume.
