Why Does a Yeast Infection not go away?

Why Does a Yeast Infection not go away?

A yeast infection is a fungal infection causes itching and extreme burning sensation.

A yeast infection is mostly caused by a fungus called candida. These fungi usually live in warm and moist surface, like on the skin or mucous membrane.

What Causes Yeast to does not heal

Candida grows well in mucous membrane. Yeast infection typically treated with the help of Antifungal medications, but these fungi easily develop resistance. Therefore some infections persist for a longer duration. Certain factors help them to multiply out of control.

Generally an Antifungal drug is prescribed for at least 7 days, but a person may need to continue it, to prevent the risk of relapse.

Treatment Resistance

Some yeast may be resistant to antifungal medication. This resistant yeast multiply, while less resistant strain dies by the effect of antifungal medicine.

Apart from this, the person may have genetic susceptibility for certain kind of yeast infections. For example, in familial candidiasis (FC), it is an inherited genetic infection. People with FC may show fungal infection at their early childhood.

Weakened Immune System

Person having low immunity are more susceptible for fungal infections. If the person is already suffering from chronic diseases like,

  • AIDS (Acquired Immune-Deficiency Syndrome),
  • APECED (autoimmune poly-endocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy),
  • AD-HIES (autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome)
  • Then, the chances to get yeast infections increase.

If it is not a yeast infection

Some infection mimic like yeast infection, but may not be yeast infection. At that condition they don’t show result for given medications.

It is best to visit a doctor and get proper diagnosis to confirm whether or not it is a yeast infection.

Treatment for yeast infection

Medical treatment depends on the fact that whether the infection is acute or chronic.

For Acute Yeast Infection

If the infection appears suddenly then, it is an acute yeast infection. Person suffering from acute yeast infection may benefit from Over The Counter (OTC) drug like; Fluconazole, topical antifungal ointment or suppository.

Chronic Yeast Infection

Chronic yeast infection persists for a longer duration or may reoccur. A doctor may prescribe a higher dose for longer duration. People suffering from chronic yeast infection should take maintenance dose, for at least 6 months to prevent its relapse.

There are some life-style remedies, which can help to reduce chances of its relapse:

  • Keep skin or genitals dry
  • Include probiotics in your diet
  • Stop to use fragrant soap or body-washes.
  • Stop using deodorants on affected skin
  • Don’t share your towel or clothes to anyone.

My Takeaways:

Most of the yeast infection may take 1-2 weeks to heal. However, certain home remedies also help to prevent risk of chronic infections.

A person suffering from acute or chronic infection should contact their doctor. They may understand the situation and may give alternative medicine.

Well explained topic. I think yeast infection usually gets better in 3- 7 days so depending on how severe the infection is we should monitor the results
