Why do many women feel hesitant to visit a gynecologist?

Fear, stigma, embarrassment and lack of awareness often prevent women from seeking timely gynecology care.

According to WHO - 80% of the cervical cancers can be prevented by early diagnosis, 70% of gynecology problems are more treatable when detected early and 60% of women are unaware of the recommended screening guidelines.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN CARE IS DENIED ?

  1. Late diagnosis - conditions like PCOS, cysts, fibroids and infection may worsen if left untreated.
  2. Delayed screening - missing regular checkups may delay early detection of serious conditions.
  3. Untreated menstrual problems - Ignoring severe pain, irregular cycles or heavy bleeding may result in serious complications.
  4. Emotional stress - Ongoing symptoms and delayed care can increase anxiety and affect mental wellbeing.

HOW CAN WE REDUCE STIGMA ?

  1. Open conversations - Ensure reproductive health is openly discussed with family, friends and doctors.
  2. Education - Reproductive health and menstrual health should be taught in school.
  3. Healthcare support - Encouraging healthcare workers to create judgment free and supportive environment.

Normalizing reproductive and menstrual health discussions can help more women seek timely care.

I think awareness and open conversations are the biggest steps toward reducing stigma, because many women delay care simply due to fear or embarrassment.

I think it starts with school education. If these topics are taught in schools from an early age, people won’t feel hesitant about them in the future. And yes, conversations about menstrual and reproductive health should definitely be normalized in today’s time.
