Why do many patients think “more medicines = faster recovery”?

I’ve often noticed that some patients feel disappointed when they receive fewer medicines during a consultation. Many people still believe that taking multiple tablets or injections means the treatment is “stronger” or more effective.

Because of this mindset, unnecessary antibiotic use, self-medication, and overuse of supplements have become quite common in some situations.

But in reality, rational prescribing is not about giving more medicines — it’s about giving the right medicine in the right dose for the right duration.

It made me realize how important patient education is in healthcare. Sometimes reassurance and proper counseling may be just as important as the prescription itself.

Why do you think many patients still associate more medicines with better treatment?

I have a contrasting opinion.

What I believe and have seen is that patients who are prescribed fewer medicines consider the doctor to be good. It’s of the belief that fewer medicines means doctor knows exactly what’s the issue and is treating only that, not anything unnecessary.

It depends on background of the patient, if you consider patients from rural setup they think more medicines speed recovery, but when it comes to urban patients few medicines less side effects and right medicine, it is matter of perception..

I feel prescribing medicines should be according to the situation and condition. If the condition require more medicines then they should be given and vice versa. The important thing is making the patient understand why they are being given the medicines and taking it in the right way .

Taking more medication will only lead to effect our liver , sometime cause toxicity and drug accumulation , people think that more medication = more impact full its totally a myth.
