Why antibiotics don’t work for viral infections?

Many of us have taken antibiotics for a sore throat, cold, or fever, thinking it will “speed up recovery.”

But not every infection needs an antibiotic.

Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria, not viruses.

Common illnesses like cold, flu, and most sore throats are caused by viruses.

Viruses live and multiply inside our own cells, and antibiotics have no target to act on.

Taking antibiotics unnecessarily:

• Doesn’t cure the illness
• Can cause side effects
• Contributes to antibiotic resistance

That’s why doctors don’t always prescribe antibiotics, even if we feel very sick.

Have you ever expected an antibiotic prescription for a viral illness?

Viral organisms have a specialized mechanism which enables them to mutate several times. This provides them with the power to be immune to drugs. Antibiotics are specifically designed to destroy bacteria and not viral pathogens.
